cuirass
Two-piece body protection
A cuirass is armor covering the torso, typically consisting of a breastplate and backplate fastened together.
The term comes from the French word for leather, reflecting early materials.
In modern use, cuirass appears mainly in historical contexts: The museum displayed a sixteenth-century cuirass.
Ceremonial cavalry units in some countries still wear cuirasses on parade.
