great helm

Medieval barrel helmet

A great helm is a type of medieval helmet that fully enclosed the head, characterized by a flat or slightly rounded top and a cylindrical shape with narrow eye slits.

Worn over a mail coif, it offered excellent protection but limited vision and breathing: The knight lowered his great helm before the charge.

Also called a pot helm or barrel helm.
