surcoat

Armor's outer layer

A surcoat is a loose outer garment worn over armor in medieval times, typically displaying heraldic symbols that identified the wearer in battle: Knights wore surcoats bearing their family's coat of arms.

The term also applies to similar outer garments worn by civilians, especially a sleeveless tunic worn over other clothing.
