spleen
Abdominal lymphoid organ
The spleen is an organ near the stomach that filters blood and helps fight infection.
Historically, the spleen was thought to produce black bile, the humor responsible for melancholy and ill temper.
This gives us the figurative sense: spleen is spite, bad temper, or irritability.
To vent your spleen is to express anger or frustration, often disproportionately.
