rupture

Break under pressure

Rupture is a break or tear, especially one that happens suddenly or violently.

A pipe ruptures under pressure; a tendon ruptures during exertion.

The word applies to both physical breaks and abstract ones: a rupture in diplomatic relations, the rupture between old friends.

In medicine, a rupture often refers specifically to a hernia or to an organ tearing.

To rupture is to break apart or cause to break: The explosion ruptured the fuel tank.
