megrims

Bouts of melancholy

Megrims is an old-fashioned word for low spirits or depression: a fit of the megrims.

The word originally meant migraine headaches, and this sense persists in veterinary use for a disorder affecting horses.

The singular megrim appears occasionally but the plural dominates in both the mood and headache senses.
