T cells
Immunity's cellular soldiers
T cells are white blood cells central to the immune system's defense against infection and disease.
Named for the thymus gland where they mature, T cells recognize and destroy infected or cancerous cells, coordinate immune responses, and form immunological memory.
Different types include helper T cells, which activate other immune cells, and killer T cells, which directly attack threats.
The patient's T cell count was dangerously low.
