hematopoiesis

Making blood cells

Hematopoiesis is the production of blood cells in the body.

In adults, this occurs primarily in bone marrow, where stem cells differentiate into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

The term appears in medical and biological contexts: The drug suppresses hematopoiesis.

Also spelled haematopoiesis in British English.
