T-cells
Adaptive immunity soldiers
T-cells are white blood cells central to the immune system's response to infection and disease.
They mature in the thymus gland (hence the T) and come in several types: helper T-cells coordinate immune responses, killer T-cells destroy infected or cancerous cells, and regulatory T-cells prevent the immune system from attacking the body's own tissues.
HIV specifically targets T-cells, which is why it devastates immunity.
Her T-cell count was dangerously low.
