polycythemia

Too many erythrocytes

Polycythemia is a blood condition in which the body produces too many red blood cells, thickening the blood and increasing the risk of clots.

It may arise from bone marrow dysfunction (polycythemia vera) or as the body's response to low oxygen levels, as occurs at high altitude or with chronic lung disease.
