hypochondria

Unfounded disease worry

Hypochondria is excessive worry about one's health, especially the conviction that minor symptoms indicate serious illness.

A hypochondriac interprets every headache as a brain tumor, every cough as lung cancer.

The condition involves not imaginary symptoms but catastrophic interpretation of real ones: His hypochondria has him convinced that mole is melanoma.

The clinical term is now health anxiety disorder.
