vapors

Mists and fogs

Vapors refers to visible suspensions of particles in the air—steam, mist, or gaseous substances: toxic vapors from the chemical plant.

Historically, the vapors was a catch-all diagnosis for women's ailments attributed to exhalations from internal organs, manifesting as fainting, anxiety, or emotional outbursts.

The term now appears ironically: I nearly got the vapors when I saw the bill.
