role
Part to play
A role is a part played by an actor in a performance, or more broadly, a function someone fills in a situation: She took on the role of mediator.
The word extends to any expected behavior pattern: gender roles, parental roles, the role of government in education.
A role model is someone whose behavior others imitate.
To play a role in something is to contribute to it.
