gestalt

More than parts

A gestalt is a unified whole that has properties beyond the sum of its parts—a configuration where the overall pattern matters more than individual components.

The concept comes from German psychology and emphasizes that we perceive organized wholes rather than isolated elements: The gestalt of the room changed completely when she moved the furniture.

The word often appears in discussions of perception, design, and therapy.

Gestalt therapy focuses on present experience and awareness rather than analyzing the past. (Capitalized Gestalt appears in formal references to the psychological school.)
