breadwinner
Household income source
A breadwinner is the person whose income supports a household.
The term evokes traditional family structures where one spouse—historically the husband—earned money while the other managed the home: She became the family's breadwinner after her husband's injury.
The word remains common even as dual-income households have become the norm.
