commitment

Pledge to follow through

Commitment is one of two nouns derived from the verb commit; the other is commission.

When you make a commitment, you give assurance that you will be responsible for something.

Someone’s commitment is their dedication to a responsibility: Her commitment in leading the scout troop was admirable.

If you honor a commitment, you fulfill an obligation.

Sometimes commitment refers to financial matters: The club’s other commitments make it impossible to carry out the improvements this year.
