belay

Fix the rope

Belay has two main meanings connected by the idea of securing.

In climbing, to belay is to secure a rope around a fixed point or to manage the rope for a climber: I'll belay you from below.

In nautical use, belay means to secure a rope by winding it around a pin or cleat.

The command Belay that! means stop or disregard what was just said—originally naval slang that spread to general use.
