systole

Heart's pumping phase

Systole is the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle contracts, pumping blood into the arteries.

It alternates with diastole, the relaxation phase.

The two appear together in blood pressure readings: 120 over 80 means systolic pressure of 120 and diastolic of 80.

Systole comes from a Greek word meaning contraction.
