reciprocating
Moving in alternation
Reciprocating describes back-and-forth motion, especially in machinery.
A reciprocating engine converts linear piston movement into rotational force.
A reciprocating saw cuts with a blade that moves rapidly in and out.
The word comes from reciprocate, meaning to give and receive mutually, but the mechanical sense dominates: the reciprocating motion of the pump.
