heart failure
Pump gives out
Heart failure is the inability of the heart to pump blood effectively enough to meet the body's needs.
It doesn't mean the heart has stopped—that's cardiac arrest—but rather that it's weakened or stiffened and can't keep up with demand.
Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, and fluid buildup in the legs or lungs.
Heart failure is typically chronic and progressive: She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure at seventy-two.
