pinnace

Small auxiliary vessel

A pinnace is a small boat, typically one carried aboard a larger sailing vessel for ferrying crew and supplies to shore.

In the Age of Sail, pinnaces served as tenders, scouts, and utility craft: The captain sent the pinnace ahead to survey the harbor.

The term is now largely historical, appearing mainly in accounts of naval history and exploration.
