battlecruiser
Speedy capital ship
A battlecruiser is a large warship developed in the early twentieth century that combined the heavy guns of a battleship with the speed of a cruiser, achieved by sacrificing some armor protection.
These vessels were designed to outgun anything they couldn't outrun and outrun anything they couldn't outgun.
The concept fell out of favor after World War I when several battlecruisers proved vulnerable to enemy fire.
The term now appears frequently in science fiction, where it designates large, fast military spacecraft.
