capital ship

Fleet's main warship

A capital ship is the largest and most powerful class of warship in a navy—historically battleships and aircraft carriers, the vessels around which fleets are built and battles decided.

The term reflects their importance: nations invest enormous capital in them, and losing one represents a strategic blow.

The treaty limited each signatory to twelve capital ships.
