astrometry

Mapping the heavens

Astrometry is the branch of astronomy concerned with measuring the positions and movements of celestial bodies.

While other astronomical disciplines study what stars and planets are made of or how they behave, astrometry focuses on precisely where they are and how they move through space: Astrometry data revealed the wobble that indicated an orbiting planet.
