ferrotype

Iron plate portrait

A ferrotype is a photograph made on a thin iron plate coated with dark enamel or lacquer, producing a direct positive image.

Popular from the 1860s through the early 1900s, ferrotypes were cheap and quick to produce, common at fairs and carnivals.

Also called a tintype, though the plate is iron, not tin.
