latent image
Pre-development film impression
A latent image is an invisible image formed on photographic film or paper after exposure to light but before development.
The chemical changes have occurred, but the image remains hidden until processing reveals it.
The term appears in photography manuals and extends metaphorically to anything present but not yet visible: The latent image of who she would become was already there in childhood.
