tintype

Iron plate portrait

A tintype is a photograph made by creating a direct positive image on a thin sheet of metal coated with dark lacquer or enamel.

Despite the name, tintypes were usually made on iron, not tin.

Popular from the 1860s through the early 1900s, they were cheap, durable, and quickly produced—common at carnivals and boardwalks.

An old tintype of my great-grandparents hung in the hallway.
