collodion

Photographic coating liquid

Collodion is a syrupy solution of nitrocellulose in ether and alcohol that dries to form a tough, transparent film.

It was used in early photography for the wet-plate process and in medicine as a wound dressing that seals and protects skin: The doctor applied collodion to the cut.

The word survives mainly in historical and specialized contexts.
