historical record
Chronicle of events
A historical record is documentation of past events—written accounts, official documents, archaeological findings, or other evidence that survives to inform our understanding of history.
The phrase often appears with "the": The historical record shows that the treaty was signed under duress.
It can refer to the totality of preserved evidence about a period or topic, or to a specific document: Census data provides a valuable historical record of population shifts.
