grayscale

Shades of neutral

Grayscale refers to images or displays using only shades of gray, from white through black, without color.

A grayscale photograph strips away hue, leaving only tonal values: Convert the image to grayscale.

In design and printing, grayscale simplifies production and focuses attention on form rather than color.

The term also describes any spectrum between two extremes: Ethics isn't black and white—it's grayscale.
