quadraphonic

Sound from everywhere

Quadraphonic describes a sound system using four separate audio channels, typically with speakers positioned in four corners of a room to create surround sound.

The technology emerged in the 1970s as an advance beyond stereo's two channels: a quadraphonic mix of the album.

Also spelled quadrophonic.

The format never achieved mainstream success but anticipated later surround sound systems.
