blank tape
Recording medium, unused
Blank tape is an audio or video cassette with nothing recorded on it, ready to capture new content.
The term evokes an era when home recording meant pressing play and record simultaneously: I need a blank tape to record this show.
Figuratively, a blank tape suggests emptiness or the absence of memory—someone with no recollection might say their mind is a blank tape.
