child

Child is the standard, gender-neutral term for designating a young person from birth until puberty.
In a more technical sense, it denotes human offspring of any age: Their adult child lives with them.
From its original meaning, child has developed figurative meanings that contain the notion of offspring or descent: a style of painting that is a child of Impressionism.
The irregular plural developed in Middle English.
