generations

Successive family layers

Generations is the plural of generation—a group of people born and living around the same time, or the span of time between parents and children (roughly 25-30 years).

The word often appears in discussions of cultural shifts: Generations of Americans grew up with television.

It also describes successive versions or iterations: three generations of iPhones.

When people speak of generations of a family, they mean lineages across time: My family has farmed this land for generations.
