souls

Immortal inner selves

Souls is the plural of soul—the immaterial essence believed to animate living beings and, in many traditions, to survive bodily death.

The word extends to people themselves: Lost souls wandered the shelter.

It also means the essential quality of something: These buildings have no souls.

In music, souls can refer to practitioners of soul music.
