Guarded home area
The defensive zone is the area of a playing surface that a team must protect—the end containing their own goal.
In hockey, it's the zone behind the blue line nearest your goaltender: They couldn't clear the puck out of their defensive zone.
The term applies similarly in other sports with territorial play.
