convention

Unwritten social rule

Convention centers on agreement and gathering.

A convention is a large formal assembly—political parties hold conventions to nominate candidates, and industries hold conventions to network and exhibit: the annual comic book convention.

Convention also means an established practice or custom accepted by general consent: social conventions, the conventions of the genre.

What's conventional follows these norms; to flout convention is to defy them.

In contracts, a convention is a formal agreement between parties, especially nations.
