first downs
Ten-yard achievements gained
First downs are gains of ten or more yards in American football, entitling the offensive team to a new set of four attempts to advance the ball.
The term also refers to the statistic tracking such gains: The team had twenty-three first downs.
A first down resets the count, giving the offense four more chances to gain another ten yards or score.
