Soldiers serving in a combat zone often receive special pay and tax exemptions.
The term extends figuratively to any place characterized by intense conflict, danger, or chaos: The emergency room was a combat zone on Saturday night.
Some cities have historically used "Combat Zone" as an informal name for red-light districts with adult entertainment venues.
