backchecking

Chasing back defensively

Backchecking is a defensive tactic in hockey where forwards skate back toward their own goal to disrupt the opposing team's attack.

Rather than staying in offensive position, players pursue the puck carrier or cover opponents rushing up ice: Good backchecking prevented the breakaway.

The term extends to any sport where players retreat defensively after losing possession.
