front line

Where combat happens

The front line is the foremost position in a military conflict, where opposing forces engage directly.

By extension, it describes anyone facing challenges firsthand: front-line workers, on the front lines of the pandemic.

The spelling varies—two words, hyphenated, or one word—with the hyphenated form most common as an adjective: front-line staff.
