merchantmen
Commercial sailing ships
Merchantmen is the plural of merchantman, a ship used for commercial trade rather than warfare.
The term belongs to an era when sailing vessels carried cargo between ports and nations, vulnerable to pirates and enemy navies: The convoy protected the merchantmen crossing the Atlantic.
