New Amsterdam

Colonial Dutch settlement

New Amsterdam was the Dutch colonial settlement at the southern tip of Manhattan, founded in 1626 as the capital of New Netherland.

The English seized it in 1664 and renamed it New York.

The name survives in historical references and occasionally in nostalgic or literary contexts evoking early New York: Back when this was New Amsterdam.
