battleships

Armored sea fortresses

Battleships are heavily armored warships with large-caliber guns, the most powerful class of naval vessel from the late 19th century until aircraft carriers made them obsolete after World War II.

The word also names a guessing game where players try to locate and sink each other's hidden fleet on a grid: We played battleships on the long car ride.
