impressment
Coerced naval service
Impressment is the practice of forcing people into military or naval service.
The term is most associated with British naval policy in the 18th and early 19th centuries, when press gangs would seize men from merchant ships or port towns to crew Royal Navy vessels.
British impressment of American sailors was a major cause of the War of 1812.
