lithograph

Ink from stone

A lithograph is a print made by drawing on a flat stone or metal plate with a greasy substance, then applying ink that adheres only to the drawn areas.

The technique was invented in the late 18th century and became important for reproducing artwork and illustrations before photographic methods.

As a verb, to lithograph is to produce such prints: The poster was lithographed in three colors.
