wood engraving
Carved block art
Wood engraving is a printmaking technique using the end grain of a hardwood block, allowing finer detail than woodcuts made on the plank side.
The engraver carves away what will print white, leaving raised lines to hold ink.
The term also refers to prints made this way: a Victorian wood engraving of city life.
Wood engravings dominated book and newspaper illustration before photographic reproduction.
