sponge

Soaks up spills

A sponge is a piece of lightweight, porous material that quickly absorbs liquid.

Originally these were made from the porous skeletons of sea creatures called sponges, but now they are manufactured.

If you call someone a sponge, it may be an insult, suggesting that they like to absorb benefits from others while contributing nothing; but if you are a sponge for knowledge, you absorb it quickly.

To sponge something is to apply a sponge to it.

To sponge off someone is to get some benefit while giving nothing in return.
