Pictures in books
Illustrations are pictures or diagrams that accompany text, clarifying or decorating written material: The children's book had beautiful illustrations.
The word extends to examples that clarify a point: Let me give you an illustration of what I mean.
To illustrate is to provide such images or examples.
An illustrator creates artwork for books, magazines, or advertisements.
