leads

Shows the way

Leads connects to the idea of being in front or guiding.

A person leads a group by going first or directing: She leads the team.

A lead is a position of advantage: We have a three-point lead.

Leads are also clues or promising contacts: The detective followed several leads, sales leads.

A lead is a leash for a dog, or a wire conducting electricity.

In journalism, the lead (sometimes spelled lede) is the opening paragraph.

The verb's past tense is led—not to be confused with the metal lead, a different word entirely.
